Grand & Toy® and TerraCycle Launch National Office Products Recycling Program
TORONTO — January 20, 2015 — Grand & Toy, an affiliate of global office products provider
Office Depot, Inc., and TerraCycle Canada today announced the launch of a new, national retailer recycling program for office products.
The program comes after a successful five month K-Cup® Pack pilot recycling partnership between Grand & Toy and TerraCycle for customers in Southern Ontario. The program will now be expanded nationally and will not only include coffee capsule recycling, but will also include recycling for office supplies and computer accessories.
“We launched the pilot program based on stakeholder feedback that we received from our associates, suppliers and customers who identified waste and recycling as our most important sustainability issue,” said Serguei Tchertok, Sustainability Manager, Grand & Toy. “At Grand & Toy, sustainability has long been an important part of our business. With this new, expanded program our customers now have an opportunity to conveniently divert more waste from the landfill by recycling products that are considered waste by most municipalities. This is just one more step in our ongoing commitment to promote sustainability and minimize the adverse environmental impacts of our operations.”
The national recycling program will include three types of easily identifiable recycling boxes:
• Coffee Capsules - Recycle your used coffee capsules.
• Mixed Office Supplies - Recycle any non-electronic items found on your desk - binders, pens, pencils, staplers, scissors, file folders, and more.
• Computer Accessories - Exclusively for recycling keyboards, computer mice, web cameras, wires and cords.
Each box, once purchased, is ready to be stuffed with the items described on its label. It also comes with a pre-paid UPS shipping label, making it easy to send to TerraCycle, which then ensures all the items are properly sorted and diverted from landfill.
How The Recycling Works:
The collected waste is mechanically and/or manually separated into metals, fibers, and plastics. Metals are smelted to prepare them for the recycling stage. Fibers (such as paper or wood based products) and organic material are recycled or composted. Plastics undergo extrusion and pelletization to be molded into new recycled plastic products. Any salvageable e-waste is refurbished and reused. All data is completely wiped from applicable e-waste.
“Canadians are among the world's top recyclers, so we're thrilled to see the growing demand for more Zero Waste Boxes,” said TerraCycle CEO Tom Szaky. “Grand & Toy was the first Canadian retailer to support this innovative solution and we're pleased to continue working with them to offer even more recycling opportunities to Canadians. We are confident this program will continue to grow.”
